🛋️ Home & furnitureHow to remove coffee stains & scale in tumblers and flasks

Oxygen bleach for coffee, citric acid for scale · leave the lid off

Brown stains inside a tumbler are built-up tannin pigments from coffee and tea, and white scale is hardened minerals from water like calcium and magnesium. The causes differ, so coffee stains are broken down with oxygen bleach and scale is dissolved with an acid like citric acid.

🔬 Why this order works

Oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) releases oxygen in warm water and breaks down pigments, and citric acid dissolves alkaline scale. You don't need to scrape with a rough scourer, so it suits flasks with narrow openings.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

🧰 By material

① Stainless steel tumblers & flasks

You can use both oxygen bleach and citric acid. Steel wool scratches the surface so stains stick more easily, and chlorine bleach can cause rust-like spots.

② Plastic tumblers

Coffee color and smell soak in easily. Keep water within the heat-resistant temperature, and replace it when it gets cloudy and heavily scratched.

③ Ceramic-coated & painted products

Coatings and exterior paint can come off with bleach, acids and the dishwasher. Use only approved cleaners, and pour them only inside so they don't touch the outside.

🚫 Don't

  • Closing the lid with oxygen bleach inside — oxygen builds up and the lid can pop off or the contents spray out.
  • Using chlorine bleach together with citric acid or vinegar — it produces toxic gas.
  • Submerging a flask whole or putting it in the dishwasher when that isn't allowed.

⏳ If it has already dried

Long-accumulated coffee stains fade a lot if you repeat the oxygen bleach soak two or three times. For thick, hardened scale, leave citric acid solution in overnight, then scrub with a brush.

💡 Tip

Just rinsing it with water right after you finish drinking keeps stains from building up. Take out the seal now and then to wash and dry it separately.

❓ Common questions

Does baking soda work too?

It helps with light coffee stains and smells, but oxygen bleach works better on built-up stains. Scale is alkaline, so baking soda won't dissolve it; you need an acid like citric acid.

The seal smells.

Take out the seal and wash it with dish soap, and if the smell remains, soak it in oxygen bleach solution and rinse thoroughly. If black spots have formed in the groove, it may be mold, so replacing it with a new seal is better.
